Every second year, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) hosts the “Solar Decathlon” solar-powered home challenge. Competing collegiate teams must design, build, and operate a solar-powered house that blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with state-of-the-art energy efficiency.
This prestigious event hosts contestants from around the world. The 2013 competition had 19 competitors, including:
- Arizona State University and The University of New Mexico
- Czech Republic: Czech Technical University
- Southern California Institute of Architecture and California Institute of Technology
- Stanford University
- Team Alberta: University of Calgary
- Team Austria: Vienna University of Technology
- Team Texas: The University of Texas at El Paso and El Paso Community College
Also included in the 2013 competition was “Team Ontario” from Queen’s University, Carleton University and Algonquin College. Algonquin’s efforts were spear-headed by professor Richard Briginshaw (Architecture).
We are pleased to report that Team Ontario ranked 1st place in the Engineering category and 6th place overall.
