Pathway Explorer Profile: Justin Lawton

Computer skills come naturally to dual credit student Justin Lawton.
A little under halfway through the semester in his Computer Essentials course, he is maintaining a one hundred per cent average and believes he’s found his passion.
“I’ve always been the kind of person to pick things up really quickly,” says Lawton.
Lawton, a Grade 12 Elizabeth Wyn Wood student, also attributes his success in the course to a natural curiosity about computer programming that dates back many years.

He’s learning about computer architecture, cybersecurity, binary math and numerical systems – and looks forward to further exploring the computer science field.

Having begun exploring the computer science pathway with some success, Lawton is undaunted by the challenging nature of his potential future programs.
“I know for game development, multimedia programming and web development, the dropout rate is insane.”
Lawton also considers himself encouraged by the opportunities available through the new Ontario Student Grant introduced in the 2016 budget.
“It’s a really good grant, so I plan on applying.”
His experience in the dual credit program has begun to define the pathway toward his long-term career goal.
“Working from home sounds like a dream to me, either in game development or web development.”
