While working as a high school co-op teacher and summer school vice principal, Barbara became very interested in working as a Dual Credit Support Teacher at Algonquin College. Barbara was one of the first teachers to pilot the original program at St Paul High School from its creation many years ago. Her involvement in encouraging students to take the next step to higher learning was of utmost importance for her students’ futures. Algonquin College has always been a place where she has aspired to transition to at some point in time.

What do you like the most about being a Dual Credit support teacher?

“I like the fact that we are the ones connecting to our students on a more personal level given that the instructors might not have the time at the College Level. Each student is unique and has different needs. It is important that they recognize that I am here for them…to support them in any way….to ensure that they will be successful in this program and thus continue on to a fantastic academic career here at Algonquin College.

What do you think is the biggest challenge you face as a Dual Credit support teacher?

“Helping and encouraging the students through any crisis to avoid them dropping out of the program. They need the extra support and if I can help them,it eases their anxiety and encourages them to achieve their goals in their Dual Credit classes.

What is the most inspiring story about a student you’ve witnessed as a Dual Credit support teacher?

I am so very proud of all of our students in the Dual Credit program. It is not an easy thing for them to get to and from Algonquin from their home schools and maintain the course load at the local school level. It is a huge adjustment for many of them but with the support of the whole Dual Credit team, we are able to assist our students to achieve the success that they deserve here at the College.
