Q&A with Andrea Robichaud
Tell us a bit about yourself and your journey.
My name is Andrea Robichaud and I graduated from the Algonquin College Culinary Management program in 2010. I will never forget my time at Algonquin. It was the first time I was really on my own to discover who I was. Since graduating, I have worked in several local restaurants and, in 2013, I made the move to Regina, Sask., where I live with my husband and our three-year-old son.
I have had some incredible opportunities in my career (so far), which included creating Cooking for a Cause at home in 2020. Cooking for a Cause produces a locally curated seasonal box designed to support and promote local restaurants and food businesses, with money raised going to local community initiatives. Each box contains a variety of non-perishable items, like sauces, dry rubs, and jams, discounts, and gift cards, for example. To date, the boxes have raised $10,418 and a fourth round of boxes is scheduled to launch in mid-April 2022. I am a firm believer that community over competition is the best way to see positive change.
How did Algonquin College support and prepare you for success?
I don’t think I truly realized the impact of my college experience at the time. Looking back, my Algonquin College experience was wonderful. It gave me hands-on experience working in a restaurant setting, professors who were invested in their students, and the opportunity to build my confidence.
What is your favourite story about your career as a chef?
I have been blessed with some amazing opportunities so far in my culinary career. One of my favorite stories would be when I was asked to take part in a special International Women’s Day dinner. Five other women and I each created a special dish for the event. It was an honor working alongside such talented chefs.
What motivates you to care for your community?
Since I was young, I have always enjoyed volunteering and giving back. Knowing I’m making a difference in someone’s life has always brought me joy.
What is one specific hope or dream for your future?
My hope is to be able to continue to grow Cooking for a Cause at home and make an impact in my community.
Are you still connected to your program? If so, in what way?
I stay connected to my program and Algonquin College by following along on social media. Not only does it make me feel nostalgic, it makes me excited to see what the students are taking part in and learning about nowadays.
What advice would you give to students in your program today?
Take as many opportunities as you can. Every opportunity and experience you have, good or bad, helps you grow both personally and professionally.
Tell us your life story, in five words or less.
