Awards, Bursaries, and Scholarships
Make a difference in a students’ life this year
Three out of every four students require some form of financial assistance. Awards, bursaries and scholarships play a key role in helping students stay in school, realize their dreams and build a rewarding career.
Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards:
Scholarship: A Scholarship is based on academic merit.
Bursary: A Bursary is based on financial need.
Award: An Award is based on qualities that a student embodies and may touch on extracurricular activities.
Scholarships, bursaries and awards are given out throughout academic year (fall to spring).
Criteria: Students may be selected based on a number of criteria as discussed/decided with the donor and outlined in a gift agreement, including program of study, semester of study, campus, affiliation with a group based on self-identification; for example: Black student, Indigenous student, student with a disability, refugee, new immigrant, women, mature student, single parent, etc.
Endowed vs Non-Endowed:
Creating an endowed award, scholarship, bursary: To establish an endowed fund a minimum investment of $15,000 is required. This fund will exist in perpetuity for the lifetime of Algonquin College. An investment of $15,000 will provide approximately $600 available per year for disbursement (The principal remains untouched and 4% of the interest accrued is disbursed each year to the student(s)).
Creating a non-endowed (Expendable/annual) award, scholarship, bursary: To establish an expendable/annual fund a minimum investment of $5,000 expendable over 5 years is required. This provides an annual amount of $1,000 to be disbursed to student (s). Payment reminders each year will be sent to donors for their next installment.
