Pancho Deriger’s Bursary

Pancho DerigerPancho Deriger was a resolute, enthusiastic teacher, skilled welder and a loving husband, father, son, brother, and uncle. Pancho passed away this June from complications from a massive stroke.

Pancho began his career with Algonquin College as a Continuing Education Instructor of Welding technology in 1978. He then became a Professor of Welding, School of Technology and Trades with the College and was the Coordinator of the Welding Department until his retirement in 2006. Pancho was known as a tough, enthusiastic, and fair teacher. He cared deeply about his students and their success. Past students would often visit Pancho after their graduation and certification to thank him for his guidance as they began their successful careers in auto mechanics, plumbing, electrical etc.

Pancho was a strong advocate for the Trades Department at Algonquin – fiercely fighting for workspace for students in the Trades Department or ensuring the College recognize the importance of students pursuing careers in the Trades.

Following his retirement, Pancho and his wife Lynda moved to Chapala Mexico where he spent the past 18 years enjoying the beauty of Mexico, volunteering tirelessly with the Red Cross, assisting with Equine Therapy, supporting local artisans through organizing events and helping the local food banks. And rescuing countless dogs that he loved and cared for.

Those closest to Pancho would know that this Bursary exemplifies what he believed in…helping students succeed in a career in the Trades. This is a terrific way to honour his memory, supporting the students he loved teaching in a field he excelled in.
