Student Leadership Program
Trust Your Instincts. Find Solutions. Seek Criticism. Create Change.
Build your leadership skills and become an effective leader on campus, in your career, and in your community! The Student Leadership Program (SLP) is designed to provide practical knowledge that can be applied to any leadership opportunity. Our program was built to complement the knowledge you are gaining in your program of study. It is for this reason that participants can work through the course material on their time when they find it most convenient!
By participating in the SLP, you will have the opportunity to:
- Attend events and serve in leadership capacities in the community
- Meet new people, learn more about yourself, and expand your skillset
- Gain recognition on your Co-Curricular Record
- Receive an official certificate of completion from Algonquin College
Want to join the SLP? You can self-nominate or be nominated by a staff member. Nominations are accepted each term.
The SLP Experience
There are four SLP levels, each providing online modules and activities on a variety of leadership skills and strategies. These modules are based on the core skills necessary for effective and sustainable leadership. SLP participants also have the opportunity to gain hands-on leadership experience through volunteering for Community Projects, to make a difference in our local communities. Here’s what each level offers:
Level 1: Leading Self
This module is designed to provide a solid foundation for anyone looking to take up the mantle of leadership. Before one seeks to lead others, one must first understand why they want to be a leader and how they intend to lead. This section of the SLP focuses on the skills and qualities we possess and how we can explore our own personal growth. You will cover topics such as:
- Setting Goals and Self Motivation
- Building Confidence and Practicing Leadership Skills
- Authentic Leadership: Leading with Authenticity and Humility
Level 2: Leading Others
In this module, participants will explore the key competencies and skills that support successfully leading others in a group and 1-1 setting. This provides the opportunity to discover and determine the type of leader you want to be when working with others. The module covers the following topics:
- Communication
- Motivating Others
- Time Management and Empowering Your Team
- Mentorship
- Managing Conflict
Level 3: Leading Leaders
This level of the SLP focuses on leadership opportunities where a leader is not the only decision-maker. As this is the reality of most workplaces, a leader must learn how to work collaboratively with other leaders. In this module, we explore the following topics:
- Making Recommendations
- The Waterfall Effect
- Recognizing the Value of Others
- Keeping an Open Mind
- Influencing vs. Manipulating
Level 4: Shaping Society
The final module of the SLP is centered around the opportunity a leader has to shape society and make a positive impact in our communities. Leaders are not only present in a school or a workplace, they can be found even in the most unlikely of places. This module covers the following topics:
- Social Responsibility
- Leading with Like-Minded and Diverse Perspectives
- Environmental Leadership
- Leading in a Digital Age
The Student Leadership Program is the beginning of your journey on the path to becoming a leader in society. This program will provide you with the tools necessary to be confident in stepping up when the right opportunity arises. The first step in any process can take the most amount of courage, but fortunately, with the SLP, it’s as easy as registering for the program!
