Mission:

All Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ottawa programs and initiatives strive to further our goals for the children and youth of our city.

As a national organization, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada is the country’s leading child and youth mentoring charity.

Mentors in our programs are role models that teach by example. The importance of giving and giving back, education, respect for family, peers, and the community are all taught through these life-changing friendships.

Volunteer Position Description:

Our Mentoring In School volunteers (Bigs) spend one hour a week mentoring a child (aged 7-14) in a school in the Ottawa area. The Bigs (18 years of age and older) are placed at schools near their homes or work places, depending on their preference. Mentoring in School is generally an elementary school year commitment (September-June). However, for university students we offer flexibility by having matches run from September-April as we are aware that some of our volunteers are from outside of Ottawa and therefore may be heading home for the summer months.

Our Mentoring in School Program runs during elementary school hours but is a non-academic program. The Little is removed from class for the hour spent mentoring. The Bigs have access to the school’s gymnasium and equipment, the computer lab, the library, the arts and crafts room, the kitchen (for baking), to any board games the school has etc. The Bigs and Littles are also able to hold their sessions outside if they wish, as long as they remain on school premises at all times.

Enrollment is ongoing and we are always accepting applications.

Volunteer Requirements:

  • Police record check
