Mission: Friendship Circle provides companionship in the lives of children with special needs to help alleviate feelings of isolation while providing volunteers an opportunity to become contributing members of the community. Through our program, Friendship Circle aims to promote an inclusive community that values all individuals regardless of the challenges they face.

Volunteer Position Description:

Volunteers will be matched with a child according to the preferences indicated on the registration forms submitted by both the volunteers and families

Volunteers visit the home of a child once a week for an hour per visit after an initial introduction is made. Activities can vary according to the child’s interest, but examples that participants can engage in include following a simple recipe, playing soccer (or other sport that can be enjoyed at the home), board games, music, reading, practicing conversation skills, writing, etc.

Attend a free training party (pizza included!) where an occupational therapist will guide new volunteers.

Meet with coordinator, Elinore Rabin, to fill out a brief form and go over program details. Please note that a police check is necessary if the volunteer is over 18. A letter signed by the director of Friendship Circle can be given to volunteers so that the records check is free of charge.

Volunteer Requirements:

Minimum of 6 month commitment — the children really look forward to their weekly visits so consistency is important! Police record check is required.

How to Apply: If interested, please submit an application online through www.friendshipcircleottawa.com or email coordinator Elinore Rabin directly: elinore.friendshipcircle@gmail.com
