Mission of Helping With Furniture:
Helping With Furniture delivers gently used furniture and household items to those in the Ottawa area who are restarting their lives because of situations of hardship. We assist refugee claimants and other immigrants, as well as those who have been displaced by situations like house fires and domestic violence. Our goal is to help residents start a new life by providing both basic necessities and the comforts of a real home – at a time when those comforts are needed most.
HWF is a registered charity, not affiliated with any religious or political group and the only organization in Ottawa that helps those in need to furnish their homes free of charge.
Volunteer Position Description:
FOLLOW-UP TEAM MEMBER
This volunteer position is for resourceful people who are sensitive to cultural differences and the needs of vulnerable people. Our team members help make a house or apartment a home, taking into account functionality, as well as the needs and tastes of the families and individuals we serve.
The follow-up team visits HWF client within a week after furniture and household items have been delivered to them. Volunteers working in pairs, assemble furniture (mostly beds, cribs and tables), occasionally do some repairs, organize furniture and hang curtains, mirrors and artwork. This can prove challenging at times, as used furniture does not come with instructions.
The rewarding part is that follow-up team members get to see the end result of a long chain of actions by HWF volunteers and other community charities helping vulnerable families and individuals and the impact on the families that we serve.
Time commitment: The hours are very flexible and follow-up visits are scheduled based on the availability of the volunteer. The follow-up team leader sends a request – usually on Fridays – and volunteers respond depending on their availability. Visits typically last one to two hours.
Volunteer Position Requirements:
- Fluency in French is very useful
- Experience in using hand tools is a must
- Police Record Check
