Volunteer Position Description:

The Communications team at the Dementia Society of Ottawa & Renfrew County is looking for a creative, energetic, and social media-savvy volunteer to help plan and promote the Annual Walk for Dementia this May.

The Marketing and Communications Support will promote and publicize the Walk for Dementia in the community. This position reports to the DSORC Communication Officer Member, and will be expected to attend meetings, a volunteer orientation, and to have regular contact with the Communications Officer on work progress and strategies.

Must be available for the Walk for Dementia on May 11th, and is strongly recommended to attend the volunteer orientation on May 5th. We have two positions available.

Volunteer Requirements and Responsibilities:

  • Police record check
  • Minimum 19 years of age
  • Attend planning meetings with Supervisor, either in person or via telephone, in advance of the event
  • Assist the Communication Officer with Walk for Dementia key messages
  • Promote the Walk for Dementia in the community through local media via PSAs, blog posts, etc
  • Promote the Walk for Dementia through personal social media network, and increase the reach of The Dementia Society’s social media presence, both leading up to and on the day of The Walk for Dementia
  • Working with the Communication Officer, develop a plan to distribute brochures and posters
    Requirements, Qualifications, and Skill
  • Ensure parking and barricade monitors are providing a high level of customer service in dealing with Walk for Dementia participants, volunteers, staff and sponsors

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Media, public relations, and social media experience
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Organized and able to meet deadlines
  • Able to complete work at home, and correspond regularly with the Communications Officer via email and phone
  • Support Social Media activities on event day, as required
  • Interacting with the public/ in a group setting
  • Outdoor Activities
