Mission: Ancoura is a small Ottawa Charity that provides a nurturing and fulfilling environment for persons living with a mental illness, through permanent, affordable housing and supportive housing. We believe in the possibility of a compassionate society, free from stigma and discrimination, where people living with mental illness are full, contributing members. We have seven townhomes in Ottawa. Each townhome has three residents and a circle of volunteers who develop helping friendships with the residents. They provide social and recreational activities such as going for walks in the Gatineau, going for Tuesday night movies, preparing and sharing a meal, going to community event together.

Volunteer Position Description: Visiting volunteers build trusting relationships with, and provide support to, our residents. Volunteers encourage independence, healthy self-esteem and community participation of our residents and help reduce their isolation and reduce the barriers they face in society.

We ask visiting volunteers to have contact at least once every two weeks with a resident or residents, to attend monthly volunteer team meetings with other volunteers and the Ancoura Coordinator and to attend volunteer training sessions in the fall and spring. We ask that volunteers make a commitment of at least one year.

Visiting volunteers need to be non-judgmental and compassionate, respectful and positive; to be responsible and reliable; to have good listening and relationship-building skills; to enjoy being with others and going on outings in Ottawa and beyond; and to be able to set appropriate boundaries and to maintain confidentiality.
