Mission: Helping With Furniture (www.helpingwithfurniture.org) is a volunteer-run charitable organization that delivers gently used furniture and household items to those in the Ottawa area who are restarting their lives because of situations of hardship. We assist refugee claimants and other immigrants, as well as those who have been displaced by situations like house fires and domestic violence.

By delivering furniture and household essentials, our mission is to provide comfort, hope, and dignity to those in need.

Our goal is to help residents start a new life by providing both basic necessities and the comforts of a real home – at a time when those comforts are needed most.

HWF is a registered charity, not affiliated with any religious or political group and the only organization in Ottawa that helps those in need to furnish their homes free of charge. For these reasons, we are the choice of referral agencies and, sadly, we always have a waiting list.

Volunteer Position Description: HWF is currently in need of additional movers to assist with Saturday morning and Wednesday evening deliveries from its east-end location on Canotek Road. We ask for a commitment of at least one shift per month for each volunteer. Our movers work as a team to deliver furniture to families in need (with locations typically between Centretown and the East End.)

We are also looking for those experienced with driving moving trucks or who have a large vehicle (pick-up truck) that could haul a moving trailer.

Volunteer Position Requirements:

  • heavy lifting (more than 10 lbs at a time)
  • interacting with the public / in a group setting
  • use of a vehicle for driving is an asset
  • be alert and respect all procedures and safety measures in place
  • wear proper attire for the task and for the weather
  • complete the application form and waiver
