Mission statement: Mothercraft Ottawa is a multifaceted prenatal and parenting support agency, committed to improving the health and well-being of families in the Ottawa area.

Volunteer description:

Birth Companion Program matches at risk and vulnerable families with
a trained volunteer, who provides one on one, prenatal, labour and delivery, postnatal and parenting support, up to 6 weeks postpartum. Birth Companions must successfully complete a 20 hour training to obtain the knowledge, skills and confidence required to provide families with reassurance, comfort, support and local community resources. Interested applicants must be mature women, over the age of 20. After submitting an application, successful applicants will be invited for an interview
and must complete the full 20 hours of training before being matched with a family. Training is offered twice a year in the spring and fall, and takes place over the course of 8 weeks, (2.5hrs/week on either a week night or Saturday morning). Application submission is ongoing throughout the year.

SPECIFICALLY FREnCH AND ARABIC

* *Please note: The Birth Companion program, is not a Birth Doula certification program.

Volunteer position requirements:

  • Police Record Check for the Vulnerable Sector
  • Minimum 20 years of age
  • Training required (provided – 20 hours of Birth Companion Training)
  • Commit to volunteering for a minimum of 1 year and be matched with a birth partner within 6 months of being trained
  • Interacting with the public / in a group setting
