Mission statement: Best Buddies is a national charity that helps provide meaningful friendships for children and adults with intellectual disabilities and Autism. Through our program, participants are matched in one-to-one friendships and spend time enjoying the same experiences most people take for granted – such as going for coffee, watching a movie, or simply enjoying the company of a friend. Our program is operating in more than 400 elementary schools, high schools, universities, and colleges across Canada.
Volunteer description: We are looking for students to join our program as Peer Buddies. Peer Buddies are our dedicated volunteers who want to make a friend with someone who has an intellectual disability. The Best Buddies program allows them to contribute to the community and promote a sense of belonging.
As a peer buddy, you will be matched with someone that has an intellectual disability. Matched based on similar interests, you will talk with your buddy once a week (a phone call, text, email) and spend time together doing an activity you both choose twice a month. You will attend Best Buddies group activities like bowling or going to the movies (on campus and in Ottawa) a couple of times throughout the year.
