Community Project Highlights (September)

In September, we jump-started the year with all kinds of great Community Projects. Our #ACVolunteers made meaningful connections with each other, and our community.

Check out the highlights below!

AC Day 1

AC Day 1 is the first day of school – and it’s jam-packed with learning and hands-on activities, program orientations, and services and supports. This large event wouldn’t be possible without the help of 350+ upper-level student volunteers, staff, and faculty. Algonquin College President and CEO Claude Brulé was quoted as saying this year’s AC Day “was our most successful AC Day 1 ever!”

Charles H. Hulse Public School

Our volunteers aimed to fuel creativity in the classroom by preparing art supply baskets for each teacher at Charles H. Hulse Public School. This school is a multicultural, urban elementary school in the heart of Ottawa South.

Ottawa Community Housing

At this Community Project, volunteers worked alongside the Ottawa Community Housing staff to help residents remove unwanted furniture from their apartments. Ottawa Community Housing’s vision is to be a leader in providing safe and affordable homes to enable OCH tenants to fully participate in the socio-economic opportunities in Ottawa. City Councillor Keith Egli joined our volunteers in a pre-event meet and greet!

Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup

The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is a national conservation program that provides Canadians with the opportunity to take action in their communities wherever water meets land, one bit of trash at a time. The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is one of the largest direct action conservation programs in Canada. A conservation partnership by Ocean Wise and WWF, the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup aims to promote understanding of shoreline litter issues by engaging Canadians to rehabilitate shorelines through cleanups.

At this Community Project, we had more than 20 student volunteers participate in a shoreline clean-up at Britannia Beach, as well as a number of staff and faculty that joined the activity.
