4 Things I Wish I Knew When I Started College
Posted on Friday, October 4th, 2019
Beginning or returning to college is such an exciting time in your life. New classes, classmates, and maybe even a new city. With so much going on at Algonquin, it can be a lot to take in, and maybe even a little overwhelming – and that’s ok! I’m here to break down the top 4 things I wish I knew before starting college.
1. Take Care of Yourself
College life can get a little crazy, and it’s easy to let your health take the back burner. Things like staying up too late studying or partying, substance use, and constantly ordering Uber Eats will surely catch up to you. Luckily, Algonquin has awesome resources to help keep your health a priority:
- Health Services provides professional and confidential medical services. Visit their on-campus clinic in C141.
- Umbrella Project aims to create a safer space on campus to discuss the impact of the use of alcohol and other drugs.
2. Find the Study Spot(s) that Work for You
Finding the perfect study spot can be a challenge, especially when your needs may always be changing – today you need a quiet spot, tomorrow you need to meet with a group, and the day after that you want somewhere a little more lively. Here’s a breakdown of some key study spots around campus:

3. Be Committed to Your Academic Success
You’ll never regret taking the time to become a better student – you are here for school after all! Be open-minded to learning new study strategies and asking for help. The Library and Student Learning Centre are dedicated to helping you become the best student you can be. Be sure to check out:
4. It’s Normal to Have Doubts
Beginning or returning college can be overwhelming, and it’s normal to start to wonder if college right for you – but think again! Know that you can do it, and ASPIRE AC can help support you. ASPIRE AC is dedicated to students who may experience barriers to reaching their post-secondary goals. They know that everyone’s journey is different, so they can customize and individualize support to ensure you succeed during your time here.
