Mission: Celebrating 100 years in 2018, CNIB is a non-profit organization driven to change what it is to be blind today. We deliver innovative programs and powerful advocacy that empowers people impacted by blindness to live their dreams and tear down barriers to inclusion. Our work is powered by a network of volunteers, donors and partners from coast to coast to coast.

Volunteer Position Description:

CNIB is working on a bold and ambitious advocacy campaign that will coincide with the federal election in October. We are launching a call for National Elections Advocates in each of Canada’s 338 federal electoral ridings to spread the message that accessible, affordable technology is central to the independent lives of Canadians who are blind or partially sighted. Join us as a National Elections Advocate in your community by engaging with federal candidates, voters, and community organizations.

Specific Responsibilities and Tasks:
• Become part of a network of active volunteers and create positive change for Canadians who are blind or partially sighted.
• Connect with the candidates in your riding to find out how, if elected, they would work to improve the lives of Canadians with sight loss.
• Raise awareness of CNIB’s election campaign by attending town halls and local debates, sharing information and key messages on social media, and connecting with other advocates.
• Share CNIB advocacy resources and tools to build awareness.
• Take part in CNIB advocate training opportunities when required.

Other Responsibilities:
• Act as a community representative to raise awareness and deliver key messages on advocacy issues.
• Participate in community events and consultations to ensure the needs of Canadians are always top-of-mind.
• Work with decision-makers, such as local elected representatives and government officials, as well as businesses and organizations to discuss issues and concerns facing individuals living with sight loss.
• Build community relationships to work together to break down barriers to accessibility for Canadians who are blind or partially sighted.
• Raise advocacy issues for discussion with the wider community and provide regular feedback on your community advocacy initiatives.

Qualities, Skills, and Training:
• Excellent communication skills and confident speaking on the phone and in-person.
• Strong public speaking skills and comfortable delivering presentations.
• Comfortable interacting with elected representatives and senior officials.
• Ability to make connections and mobilize others to act.
• Ability to keep calm even in high-pressure situations or in conflict.
• Ability to articulate key messages clearly and concisely.
• Reliable, organized and able to work with minimal supervision.
• You’ll learn about CNIB, our community and sight loss.
