Tip of the Iceberg: Is Your Motivation Going On Vacation?

Rolling waves crashing on sand

“How can I stay motivated while taking classes over the summer?”

Summer is almost here! It’s the perfect time to get outside and enjoy the weather. You may feel your mood improving, which is great! What’s not so great is feeling like you’re missing out on hanging with friends or family over the summer. FOMO (fear of missing out) can be a genuine source of stress, and staying focused on school during this time of year can be a challenge. Here are a few tips to help you stay motivated.

Soak up the sun

Rise and grind! It’s important to chill out in the sun, but make sure to get some work done. Try completing some of your assignments outside, or schedule breaks that allow you to enjoy the outdoors. Even 10-15 minutes outside, taking in the greenery or simply sitting in the sun, can improve your mood and keep you focused.

Bring summer inside

If you can’t get outside as much as you’d like, consider bringing some of the outdoors in. Pick some flowers and put them in a vase on your desk. Buy a succulent. Open your windows and enjoy the nice breeze. Get green!

Reward yourself after class

Hit a patio with some classmates for an appetizer, enjoy a cold beverage, or try a new flavour of ice cream – anything to help you celebrate after periods when you’ve been dedicated to your work.

Allow time for fun

Although you’re still in school and not on vacation, make time to have some fun. Plan a mini road trip or hit the town with some friends. The key is to prevent burnout so you can keep your motivation high.

However you spend the summer, be sure to stay in the moment. Remembering why you signed up to be here will boost your motivation, no matter what the weather is. Practising mindfulness is an excellent skill to help you get through tough situations. This will keep you focused on the task at hand, so you’re not worrying about what you think you may be missing out on.
