Volunteer Position Title: Parking and Barricade Coordinator

Volunteer Position Description:

The Special Project and Events team at the Dementia Society of Ottawa & Renfrew County is looking for an experienced event management volunteer for a leadership position coordinating our Annual Walk for Dementia this May.

The Parking/Barricade Coordinators are responsible for leading a team of Parking/Barricade Monitors in setting up, monitoring, and taking down road closure barricades, and managing parking areas. This position reports to the DSORC Special Project and Events Coordinator, and will be expected to attend meetings, a volunteer orientation, and have regular contact with their supervisor on work progress and strategies.

Must be available for the Walk for Dementia on May 11th, and is strongly recommended to attend the volunteer orientation on May 5th.

Volunteer Requirements and Responsibilities:

  • Police record check
  • Minimum 19 years of age
  • Attend planning meetings with Supervisor, either in person or via telephone, in advance of the event
  • Ensure the barricades and parking area are set up before participants arrive on event day
  • Ensure barricade monitors are guarding barricades to ensure no unauthorized persons or vehicles enter the event area
  • Help direct Walk for Dementia participants to parking areas and conduct traffic control in parking areas
  • Ensure areas are kept neat and free of all litter
  • Ensure parking and barricade monitors are providing a high level of customer service in dealing with Walk for Dementia participants, volunteers, staff and sponsors
    Requirements, Qualifications and Skills
  • Event management experience
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Able to direct a team of volunteers
  • Comfortable working with the public in large crowds
  • Able to stand and walk for long periods
  • Interacting with the public/ in a group setting
  • Outdoor Activities
