Mission: Do a Barrel Roll is a Canadian registered non-profit organisation using the power of gaming of all types, from video to tabletop, to drive positive change in the lives of individuals and communities. We focus on the nexus of how gaming can drive inclusion, acceptance, belonging, friendship, community, and healthy living.

Volunteer Position Description: Do you have a knack for social media? Are you a guru at building an online following? Got content chops? Then Do a Barrel Roll is looking for you!

WHAT ARE WE DOING?

Do a Barrel Roll is working to challenge endemic narratives about gaming by highlighting how it can be a vehicle for positive change, pro-social behaviour, community development, inclusion, acceptance, belonging, and healthy living. We are looking for personal stories, thought pieces, and contributions by gamers all over the world. We think of gaming in the broadest possible sense: video; arcade; table top; mobile; AR/VR; LARPing; escape rooms; and, plenty of other categories. In particular, we are interested in stories that showcase how gaming has been a means by which gamers have found a sense of belonging, acceptance, inclusion, friendship or developed a community. Stories are the most powerful means of communicating this message. We are looking for a social media super star, someone with a real knack for building a following, to join our team to help disseminate our mission as a Social Media Coordinator.

WHAT YOU WOULD BE DOING?

We’re looking for a driven volunteer to help run our social media accounts, @doabarrelrollca on Twitter and Instagram, and Do a Barrel Roll on Facebook. You would be responsible for the following: – Develop and execute social media strategies for projects, programs, or events. This includes working on several upcoming social media campaigns. – Source, retweet/repost, and provide appropriate 280 character comment on any gaming-related news that could be of importance to our audience; – Possibly most important of all, leading the charge on building a sustained following on relevant social media platforms by posting content, retweeting, liking, engaging with influencers; – Posting on social media when we have new content on our website; – Engage in some content creation as required; – Develop and maintain a common ‘voice’ across all platforms; – Suggest strategies and uses for other social media platforms; – Work proactively with other DaBR volunteers; and, – Keep up to date with latest information and trends on social media use by non-profits. Please note that this is a volunteer, remote position. You work your own time. We ask for 1-2 hours per week, split as you see fit, but this is flexible. There is no remuneration for this position.

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR! You should be a very strong social media user, with a good track record for posting engaging content and building a following. You should be very comfortable using existing social media platforms. You should know how to use a social media management system like Hootsuite, or be able to develop a content strategy/calendar on your own. You should be organized and a self-starter, ready to take initiative even when not given direction. You should have great oral and written communication and time management skills. You should be detail oriented. You should be creative, ready to think outside the box to build Do a Barrel Roll’s profile online. You should be excited to start an online brand and voice from scratch, giving it your own personality. Experience working or volunteering with a not-for-profit organization will be considered an asset, although not required. Multimedia content creation skills would be an asset, but is not required.
