Community Project Highlights (September)
Posted on Monday, October 15th, 2018
From welcoming new students to Algonquin, to making Petrie Island sparkle – our Community Project volunteers kicked off the new school year by making a big impact on campus, and beyond. Here are a few highlights!
Residence Move-In and AC Day 1
The first week of school saw 280 upper-year volunteers coming together to help students move into Residence, welcome new students to campus at AC Day 1, and pack treat bags for the Ottawa Mission at our AC Day 1 Pop-Up Community Project. Thank you for being part of this annual tradition and starting the year off strong! More photos from Orientation →
Helping with Furniture
Our Community Project volunteers were out in full force at the Old Ottawa South Porch Sale! They helped out with the sale and a BBQ fundraiser in support of Helping with Furniture – a charity that provides gently-used furniture and household goods to help families and individuals start new lives in Ottawa.
The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup
Our volunteers took part in the annual Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup at Petrie Island, helping protect this amazing habitat for the many species that call it home. This project was a collaboration with AC Sustainability. (Photo via @ACSustainable)
Classroom Gardens
Our volunteers helped build classroom gardens in partnership with the Ottawa Network For Education, in support of an exciting new pilot project that’s bringing indoor gardening to over 40 schools across the city. This initiative is an an innovative (and tasty!) way for kids to learn about plants, nutrition, and entrepreneurship. More Classroom Gardens photos (September) →
GLAD Cleaning the Capital
Our volunteers helped clean OC Transpo’s Baseline Station and the surrounding green areas – one of two Cleaning the Capital events that Algonquin College participates in each year! More Cleaning the Capital photos →
Fall Open House (Pembroke)
Student volunteers helped make the Pembroke Fall Open House a success, as they greeted visitors, gave tours of the campus, and gave prospective students a glimpse into everything Algonquin has to offer.
Emergency Evacuation Exercise at Pembroke Lodge (Perth)
Students assisted with a mock evacuation of residents at the Lanark Lodge Nursing Home. They worked closely with local emergency crews and nursing home staff to help coordinate this important emergency preparedness exercise.
