Mission: The mission of The Good Companions is to offer programs and services, in partnership with volunteers, to promote, enhance and support the well-being, independence and zest for living of both lder adults and adults with physical disabilities.
Volunteer Position Description: The Friendly Visiting Program provides friendship to seniors and adults with physical disabilities who identify themselves or are identified as needing more social contact. The program consists of regular and ongoing visits and/or phone calls between the volunteer and client.
Duties
• Face-to-face visits with client approximately every 2 weeks and phones them during the alternate week;
• Telephones the client on a weekly basis (for telephone only visiting);
• Travel, with client, to local event or activity (optional);
• Alerts the Program Coordinator immediately on any concerns or issues;
• Visits and/or calls to the Program Coordinator on a monthly basis;
• Debrief with program Coordinator as necessary;
• Records and reports volunteer hours; and
• Attends meetings/training as scheduled.

• Positive people oriented personality;
• Punctual and reliable;
• Understands the needs, interests and concerns of older adults and adults with physical disabilities;
• Non-judgmental and accepting of diverse values and beliefs;
• Ability to build rapport and convey empathy and understanding;
• Emotional resilience, stability and maturity;
• Able to communicate clearly on the phone;
• Able to travel to community location (for face-to-face visits only);
• Able to cherish and nurture another person;
• Able to set aside own issues and problems while visiting;
• Able to work without supervision;
• Good communication skills, especially listening;
• Maintains confidentiality;
• Able and willing to ask for support when needed; and
• Can abide by the limits and boundaries of the program.
Time Commitment
• Face-to-face Visiting:
o Visits are approximately 2 hours, every other week
o Phone calls should be approximately 30 – 45 minutes alternate weeks; and
• Phone Visiting:
o Weekly basis.
