Mission statement:

The Ottawa Network for Education harnesses the resources of the Ottawa community to help students succeed in a rapidly changing world.

JA programs teach entrepreneurship, financial literacy and work readiness skills by giving students real-world tasks like goal-setting, building a personal budget, exploring interests and career pathways, and working with a team to start a small business.

Volunteer description:

JA, delivered by the Ottawa Network for Education, is recruiting volunteers from Ottawa’s business community and post-secondary institutions to lead hands-on experiential learning activities for students in grades 5 to 12 to help create tomorrow’s leaders. We are looking for volunteers with real world experience to share with students while facilitating hands-on and interactive learning experiences.

  1. JA Company program is targeted to high school students and runs for 15 weeks, either integrated into a class (during school hours) or after-school each semester. Each JA Company program is supported by a team of 2-4 volunteers to allow for flexibility in scheduling visits as not all volunteers must attend each week. Volunteers will coach/mentor students to run their own business and experience the excitement and future career potential in entrepreneurship.
  2. JA Economics For Success is an empowering one-day program for grade 8 students. EFS focuses on financial literacy, challenges students to reflect on their personal and professional goals and highlights the advantages of education and training for long-term success. Students prepare a personal budget, role play networking and interview scenarios and learn about career choices. We are presently expanding this program, and as a result this is where we have the greatest need for volunteers.
  3. JA Be Entrepreneurial Junior is an interactive and engaging one-day program that introduces Grade 5-6 students to the fundamentals of starting a business and the opportunities and challenges of being an entrepreneur. Through key entrepreneurial concepts, including product, service, competitive advantage and target market, students develop an understanding of how businesses thrive.
