Academic Assistance for Adults with Developmental Disabilities
Academic Assistance for Adults with Developmental Disabilities (AAADD) has been developed to help adults with developmental disabilities build academic skills in literacy and numeracy, and social skills within a college environment. AAADD runs 41 weeks per year, beginning at the end of August and running through to the end of June. To facilitate entry, there is a continuous intake policy. Students may take the course for a maximum of 4 years during the day, with the possibility of a 2-year extension in the evening.
In order to determine if AAADD corresponds to the student’s needs, an assessment will be completed in literacy and numeracy. Once the student starts, he/she will work independently at his/her own pace with the assistance of the class councillor. In addition to literacy and numeracy, AAADD offers a variety of courses and activities, including Current Events, Computers, Job Search and Life Skills.
Admission Requirements
- Mature student status (19 years or older)
- Must have a developmental disability
- Provide last school report card as well as a psychological assessment
- Participate in an information session and an assessment
- Have a level of independence which allows integration into full college activities
- Must be able to work in a 1-to-9 ratio
The first semester serves as a trial period where we will determine if this is “the right match” for the individual. Students will be evaluated based on attendance, punctuality, motivation, behaviour and progress. Upon meeting all requirements, the student will advance to the next semester.
