FAQs

Are there any differences between the Construction Engineering Technician and the Civil Engineering Technology programs?
The Construction Engineering Technician (2 years) program prepares its graduates for careers in the construction industry, giving them the chance to learn in several ways through a program that blends theory and practice together. The Civil Engineering Technology (3 years) program gives its graduates a larger set of skills and knowledge by dealing with more advanced topics during the third year of study. Any student who is in the Construction Engineering Technician program may, at the end of the second year, choose to enter the Civil Engineering Technology program and complete the final year of the Civil Engineering Technology program in order to obtain the Civil Engineering Technology diploma given that they meet the entry requirements for the Civil Engineering Technology program.

Students cannot join the Civil Engineering Technology program directly; they must graduate from Algonquin College Construction Engineering Technician program and meet the Civil Engineering Technology program’s entry requirements.

Where are most of my classes?
This program is offered in the LEED®Platinum Certified Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence (ACCE) Building. The Centre offers 190,000 square feet of space which allows for all of the construction and related design programs to be housed in a single location. This inter-professional space encourages collaboration between disciplines and offers many integrated and cross-program learning opportunities for students.

What is the difference between the co-op program and the standard program?
The Co-op program allows students to integrate their classroom learning with a real-world experience through a paid 14-week work term. Students are required to actively participate in and successfully complete the self-directed co-op course, readiness activities and workshops.

Do I need a computer?
As a mobile learning environment engaging our students in collaborative e-learning, students become skilled with technology used in the workplace. Students will need a computing device that meets the specifications outlined in our program. Please visit the BYOD page for computer specifications for our program.
