What is the difference between the Architectural Technician and Architectural Technology program?

Architectural Technician is a two-year program which begins with a focus on residential construction. Architectural Technology the third year (continuation of the Technician program) where students begin to focus more on commercial construction and large buildings. Also, as part of the Technology program, you will participate in a team project that brings together all facets of building construction including:
  • Design and technical resolution with the integration of material detailing, building envelop design and sustainability.
  • Structural and mechanical layout design for a commercial building.
  • Revit Architecture is used to execute the design and technical resolution for the project

What is the difference between the co-op program and the standard program?

The Co-op program allows students to integrate their classroom learning with a real-world experience through a paid 14-week work term. Students are required to actively participate in and successfully complete the self-directed co-op course, readiness activities and workshops.

How do I progress if I begin in the Winter or Spring semester?

Students who start in the co-op program in January or May must complete three four consecutive terms with no scheduled break. If students do not secure a co-op placement, they will be on a scheduled break for that term, and return to Level 4 the following term to complete the program. Is this a technical or creative program?

Our programs main focus is on the technical aspects of architecture and construction. Parallel to the technical knowledge gained, our program also offers courses that focus on architectural design and presentation techniques.

Do I need to have any previous architectural knowledge or experience?

There are no requirements to have any architectural knowledge, or use of architectural drawing applications such as AutoCAD and Revit prior to registering for our program.

What kind of assignments will I be doing?

Each course in our program is designed to focus on different formats of delivery that are suitable for the learning requirements related to the course. Many of the core courses in our program focus on project based assignments, while others have exams and projects. Some projects are group based while others are done on an individual basis.

How many hours will I spend outside of class working on course work? Is there a lot of homework?

To be successful, a typical students will need to do one hour of homework for every hour of theory class. On average, a student must be prepared to spend a minimum of 10-15 hours per week on homework, and an additional 5-10 hours per week on drawing assignments. Quizzes, tests, term papers, group projects and final exams are part of the evaluation scheme for most courses.

Do I need a computer?

As a mobile learning environment engaging our students in collaborative e-learning, students become skilled with technology used in the workplace. Students will need a computing device that meets the specifications outlined in our program. Please visit the BYOD page for computer specifications for our program.

Is there software I need to purchase?

No. Students may download the required software as part of your mobile computing fees for the program.

Once I have completed my studies, are there additional programs I may take to continue my education?

Yes, there are available pathways from our program to other programs including the Bachelor of Science (Building Science) (Honours) Degree and Bachelor of Applied Science (Building Conservation) (Honours) Degree program in Perth.
