Course Descriptions
FAM5331, sec. 510 (online) English, Math, Current Events, Life Skills and Social Skills – Teacher: Tanya D.
In English, students develop skills and abilities in reading, writing, grammar, and comprehension, using fiction, nonfiction, and real-world text.
In Math, students develop skills in time, money, and functional math used in daily living. Students also explore topics related to their financial literacy such as banking, budgeting, and making good money decisions.
In Current Events, students discuss local, national, and international news, entertainment, sports, and weather. Students read and respond to news articles and practice recognizing credible news sources. Students also explore subjects related to living and working in Canada and being an active, informed citizen.
In Life Skills, students explore a variety of practical skills and values that that can be applied to everyday living. Students explore subjects related to their health, wellness, independence, and safety. Students also gain experience filling out forms and reading functional text such as recipes, utility bills, paystubs, nutrition labels, instructions, and schedules. This course also includes a job skills component that outlines the steps and skills needed to enter the workforce.
In Social Skills, students explore skills we use everyday to interact and communicate with others. Students learn about prosocial behaviours that foster success in interpersonal relationships, community interactions and within the work environment. Setting goals, resolving conflict, growth mindset, body language, communication, and teamwork are among the skills covered.
FAM5331, sec.511 (morning), sec.513 (afternoon) Job Search and English- Teacher: Lianne C.
In Job Search, students learn the steps required to enter the workforce, from job availability, to resume writing, networking, and interview skills. Students will also learn to match their personal employment preferences with their skills and abilities, while identifying and building on those skills. Students also participate in hands-on work experience in class while learning the process of a business (AAADD Creations). Students may also participate in work placements within the College.

FAM5331, sec.512 (morning), sec.514 (afternoon) Math and Computers – Teacher: Saverio P.
In Math, students develop skills in numbers, computation, geometry, problem solving, time, money, and measurements. Students will receive an individualized textbook that accommodates the students’ academic level. Students will also have the opportunity for a hands-on approach when learning, followed by an online Math application.
In Computers, students become familiar with various computer operations and complete projects using MSWord, MS PowerPoint, MS Teams Notebook, as well as the Internet. Students will receive a USB stick device to save work and will have access to an Algonquin College student Email account. Each student is provided with a laptop for in-class use only.
FAM5331, sec.511/512 (morning), sec.513/514 (afternoon) Current Events and Life Skills – Teacher: Dawn T.
In Current Events, students learn about Canada’s provinces and territories as well as other parts of the world, continents, cardinal directions, oceans, and environmental solutions. Students use the internet to research local, national, international news, entertainment, sports, and weather. *This course is taught on Wednesdays only*
In Life Skills, students explore subjects related to health and wellness, independence in the home, community involvement, communication, personal, social, and safety skills. *This course is taught on Thursdays only*
FAM5331, sec. 515 English and Math – Teacher: Dawn T. – EVENING ONLY
The English component of this course is designed to assist students in developing skills and abilities in reading, spelling, grammar and comprehension. The math component assists students in developing skills in numbers, computation, geometry, problem solving, time, money and measurements.
FAM5331, sec. 517 Computers – Teacher: Anna N. – EVENING ONLY
In computers class, students become familiar with various computer operations and complete projects using MS Word, MS PowerPoint and share their work using MS Teams. Each student is provided with a laptop and USB stick for in-class use only. Students will obtain an Algonquin College student email account with access to MS Office programs.
