Post-Secondary Programs

If you have an interest in a particular trade but don't have the experience to get a job and start an apprenticeship, there is another training option: a post secondary program at Algonquin College. These one-year diploma programs give students the knowledge and skills needed to enter into many rewarding careers. A diploma from one of Algonquin's post secondary trades programs is highly regarded by employers. Graduates are very successful in finding work in their fields. After getting a job, many graduates choose to enter into an apprenticeship. After completing the post secondary program, some graduates may be eligible to write exemption tests for part or all of the in-school portion of the apprenticeship. Algonquin's School of Transportation and Building Trades offers four full time post secondary programs:

Apprenticeship Programs

In order to become a qualified tradesperson or "journeyperson," an individual completes a hands-on training program called an apprenticeship. About 90% of an apprenticeship is completed on the job at the apprentice's place of employment (you must have an employer willing to give you a job and sponsor you as an apprentice). The rest of the training is usually obtained at college (usually for two months at a time). Most apprenticeships take two to five years to complete. Apprentices are paid by their employer while learning on the job and may be eligible for employment insurance while in school. Algonquin College trains apprentices in many areas including:

Continuing Education - Part-Time Studies

Continuing Education courses are part-time classes offered evenings and weekends. The School of Transportation & Building Trades delivers a very wide range of courses, from carpentry courses for the do-it-yourselfer to certification courses for industry professionals.
