Botanical Art in Watercolour  MMA5003

Combine your love of nature and art. This hands-on-workshop introduces materials and traditional watercolour techniques to create detailed realistic portraits of botanical subjects. Sketching in the gardens at the college is combined with exercises in the classroom on colour and techniques. Demonstrations and painting practice of leaves and flowers enable participants to accurately portray a botanical subject of their choice. Students are given individual instruction and helpful critiques throughout the course. Previous drawing experience is recommended and basic watercolour skills are helpful.

Instructor: Kerri Weller

Trained as a graphic designer and medical illustrator, Kerri has worked extensively in both fields including 10 years at the Ontario Science Center in Toronto. Her focus now is on painting and art instruction with the approach that creative talent should be balanced with technical skill.

Recent exhibitions include a group show of contemporary botanical artists at the John B. Aird Gallery, Toronto, 2007 and featured artist at Canada Blooms Botanical Art Exhibit, Toronto, 2008.

 
Expressive Painting   MMA5002

Discover the joys of expressive painting in acrylics, watercolour, inks, gouache and learn the secrets of painting spontaneously and in layers using fresh vivid colours. Students learn about the techniques that are used to create beautiful semi-abstract works. Learn about current painting methods and materials. Develop an understanding of the elements of good composition. If you have always wanted to paint in a direct way on canvas and paper, then this is the course for you.

Suzanne is a long time practising artist with a special interest in colour and composition. She has taught drawing, painting, and visual fundamentals in the Department of Art and Design at the University of Alberta and has also instructed both at Grant MacEwen College and Algonquin College. Suzanne has also conducted classes and workshops in museums and galleries throughout Canada including the Royal Ontario Museum and at the Canadian Museum of Nature. Her paintings and drawings are included in many public and private collections.
 
Introduction to Oil and Acrylic   MMA0327

This course will introduce students to acrylic and oil painting methods. Students will discover the pleasures and versatility of painting as they become familiar with the medium of their choice (acrylic or oil). Various painting techniques, colour mixing and handling of paint will be addressed. Painting subjects will range from landscape, still life and copying the Impressionist masters. Come enjoy this fun and informative class.

Pastels - Introduction   MMA5000

This course starts with an in depth explanation of the many types of pastels, their use in conjunction with each other, the tools used to manipulate the medium, as well as different types of papers and their effects. Students experiment with colour and special effects and practise using colour spontaneously. Some colour theory includes a colour wheel, mixing, warm cool, and value study. Students also work on incremental learning projects, applying techniques, and receive feedback and guidance on other aspects such as drawing, and composition. Students work more independently as the week progresses, working with landscapes, florals, still life, and personal preference.

Margaret lives in the Ottawa valley and is known as a teacher of pastel and life drawing workshops. With a strong emphasis on drawing skills, Margaret approaches pastel through any subject matter and encourages experimenting with many techniques. Margaret’s work has been exhibited widely through North America.

Mixed Media Landscape Painting MMA0357

Come and paint at inspiring locations in the Nations Capital. You will create from and learn to use the landscape as a starting point for many painting techniques and mixed media methods. Students will be instructed in colour mixing, composition, and various approaches to landscape painting. Demonstrations will be accompanied by examples of various artists works and art periods. The Fundamentals of Drawing   MMA0313

In this drawing course, students will gain the necessary skills to create compelling two dimensional images based on perspective drawing, measuring and judging proportions, with the help of reference points, negative space, use of light sources and shadows, reflections and more. Different drawing materials and methods will be introduced. Students will learn how to progress their work with easy-to-follow, hands-on tutoring covering the principles of drawing. Students will take part in a variety of exercises working from basic and more advanced still life compositions, moving towards portraiture and the human figure. This course is designed for beginners or anyone who wishes to refresh or give a solid base to their drawing skills.
