Advanced Standing

Applicants may be eligible for direct entry into an advanced level due to previous college or university education, or the acquisition of prior learning assessment and Recognition (PLAR) credits from experiential learning. To apply for Advanced Standing, applicants must complete and submit an application form to ontariocolleges.ca and provide official records or transcripts of their secondary and post-secondary education and PLAR credits. Supporting documentation including course outlines for all post-secondary courses must also be included. Applicants requesting advanced standing will be charged an additional $50 assessment fee.

Following an assessment by a program representative, the Registrar's Office will notify students of their appropriate entry level.

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition
Credit for life and work experience

You may feel that you have gained valuable knowledge and skills through independent study, working, volunteering, travel and so on. If so, the Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) Program is designed to help you identify learning gained from those experiences and translate this learning into college credits. This may enable you to receive a Diploma or Certificate in less time and with less cost.

Credits for PLAR are not the same as Exemptions.

  • PLAR credits:
are for learning you have gained from experience.
  • Exemptions:
are for previously acquired equivalent courses taken at recognized educational institutions.

For detailed information and advice, and to initiate an application for PLAR, please contact the PLAR Coordinator at 613-727-4723 Ext. 7027.
