The Motive Power Technician Co-op Apprentice Diploma combines apprenticeship curriculum with college curriculum and includes a paid co-op placement for students which allows them to hone their skills with a potential employer while they are in college. The program includes hundreds of hours of shop time to prepare students for their co-op work placements. Students learn about fuel and electrical systems, vehicle chassis, internal combustion systems, safety and shop techniques, and much more. This new apprenticeship program replaces the curriculum of the automotive program the College had previously offered.
The Pembroke Campus is the only Algonquin College Campus
to offer this program for the
fall of 2009 and space is limited.

Careers in Automotive
Having a college diploma positions our graduates to work in many areas of the automotive trade. While the majority of our graduates want to work as automotive service technicians, they can also find employment in parts and manufacturing. Plus, the business courses they take as part of their program give them the skills to move into managerial or supervisory roles once they have more experience working in the field.
The automotive sector is one of the largest employers in the province of Ontario. In fact, one in five jobs is connected to the automotive industry in the province. In Renfrew County, there are more apprentices registered in automotive than any other trade. It's a sector that's always hiring!
Co-op Placement
This program gives you the opportunity to complete all three leves of the Automotive Service Technician Apprenticeship Training Program curriculum, earn a college diploma, and experience up to 15 weeks of on-the-job training. Your paid co-operative education experience will allow you to hone your skills as an automotive technician and also position you to make valuable connections within the autmotive trade.

Our Shops
We have two automotive shops at the Pembroke Campus allowing our students to work on both large and small engines. The shops include new equipment such as hydraulic hoists and computerized hand scanners - providing students with the opportunity to learn on the equipment that is used at most automotive repair garages. Whether it's changing a tire or replacing brake pads, our students can take advantage of small class sizes by receiving hundreds of hours of practical learning experiences in our shops.
Industry Connections
Our program seeks the advice of local employers who are in the automotive trade. An advisory committee has been established to provide input on course curriculum and industry trends, helping the College adjust its programming to meet the needs of employers. The College's move to the Motive Power Technician Co-op Apprentice Diploma program is a prime example of the College reacting to the needs of its employers. Employers have told the College that having students come to them who have already completed the three levels of the apprenticeship training program would be beneficial in helping them meet their hiring needs.
