Frequently Asked Questions

Learn the answers to the most Frequently Asked Questions for the Urban Forestry – Arboriculture Program.

What is Urban Forestry?

Every tree that exists in an urban landscape is part of an ecosystem. Our “urban forests” are more important now than ever, due to the effects of climate change and globalization. Many invasive species threaten our trees in this modern age. Arborists are experts in the management of these pathogens and the long-term care of this precious resource.

Why is Urban Forestry important?

There is a growing demand for urban green-space professionals due to the rapid pace of urbanization; the need to adapt to multiple impacts of climate change; and increasing demand from the public for the recreational, psychological and health benefits that green-space networks provide. Cities all over the world will need urban forestry professionals who can deal with these complex, multi-disciplinary challenges, and provide livable, sustainable and greener communities.

How long is this certificate program?

A one-year Ontario College Certificate program is completed in eight months of studies. That means that you will start your studies in September and complete your two semesters at the end of April.

How much time will I spend outside of the classroom?

Students spend 70% of their time over the 8 months outside, in all weather conditions, practicing their climbing techniques on real trees in the landscape. In addition to this, real workplace scenarios will be set up so that students have the best head start to jump into the industry as efficient workers.’

How will I travel to and from my field trips?

As a student registered in the Urban Forestry – Arboriculture program at Algonquin College’s Pembroke Waterfront Campus, you will spend significant time in the field as your program has extensive field trips to enhance your learning experience. You will be expected to attend all of these field trips as part of your program of study. Many of the locations that students visit will be inaccessible by car, unsafe for parking your personal vehicle, or have limited space for parking. For this reason, students are strongly encouraged to purchase a bus pass through the Campus Proud Shop to ensure they don’t have to worry about transportation to and from field trip locations.

The cost of the bus pass is outlined below. Note that there are fewer field trips in the Winter months, so the bus cost is lower than in the Fall terms of your program.

  • Fall: $117
  • Winter: $136

You can purchase your bus pass through the Proud Shop during your program orientation day. If you are unable to attend your program orientation, the bus passes will be available during the first week of school in September by visiting the Proud Shop, which is located on the first floor of the campus, next to the library.
