November 10, 2009 - Woodroffe campus vaccination clinic open for priority groups - Nov. 11

Dr. Rick Rowland, Manager, Health Services, circulated a memo regarding the Woodroffe Campus vaccination clinic  for priority groups.

We have received a limited number of doses of H1N1 Influenza vaccine in the Algonquin Health Services.

These vaccines will be made available to H1N1 priority groups as defined by the province of Ontario on Wednesday, November 11 between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. in room C141. If you are in one of the priority group listed below, be sure to bring your Health Insurance card (OHIP, RAMQ, etc.).

If you are one of the following priority groups you may come for vaccine on Wednesday, November 11:

  • Pregnant women
  • Care-givers of children under 6 months
  • Children 6 months to 5 years of age accompanied by parent or legal guardian and currently enrolled in Algonquin’s Early Learning Centre
  • People under 65 with chronic medical conditions (eg. Asthma, cancer, immune problems)
  • People living with someone who is high risk but can’t receive vaccine

November 6 , 2009 - Continuing to keep yourself protected from the H1N1 virus - new campus FAQs

Dr. Rick Rowland, Manager, Health Services, circulated a memo regarding the new H1N1 campus FAQs.

You can avoid catching it if you do not put the virus in your eyes, nose or mouth. (The virus will live for hours on hard surfaces, so clean your hands after touching computer keyboards, doors, desks, elevator buttons, taps, and other items that are touched by many people.)

H1N1 is showing a definite pattern of symptoms:

  • Rapid onset of sore throat
  • Fever, pains in various parts of the body
  • Headache
  • Fatigue

October 23 , 2009 - H1N1 Flu Vaccination Clinics open on Monday, October 26, 2009

As the initial supply from the province will be limited, OPH will focus on providing the vaccine to the following groups of residents in the first seven to 14 days of operation:

  • People 6 months old to 65-years-old with chronic medical conditions
  • Healthy children between 6 months and five years of age
  • Health care workers
  • Household contacts and care providers of infants younger than six months and people with compromised immune systems
  • Pregnant women (Pregnant women will also have the option to receive the non-adjuvanted H1N1 vaccine, which is expected to be delivered in mid-November.

October 20 , 2009 - Influenza A (H1N1) Update 5

Dr. Rick Rowland, Manager, Health Services, circulated a memo regarding the continued monitoring of H1N1 on Campus this fall.

H1N1 continues to gain much public and media interest, and as promised, we’re keeping the College community updated when conditions warrant. One case of H1N1 has been confirmed in an Algonquin College student.

The student in question is not a residence student and has not attended classes since beginning to feel ill. The student is not hospitalized and will remain absent from classes until healthy.

October 5 , 2009 - Doctor's Notes

Kent MacDonald, Vice President, Academic, circulated a memo regarding requiring students to provide doctor's notes for missed classes.

I have had the opportunity to consult a variety of faculty and academic staff in order to best understand the implications of ceasing the practice of asking for doctor’s notes. The outcome of this consultation has been clear and as a result, faculty are now advised not to request a doctor’s note when a student misses a class, lab, or other learning activity.

September 25 , 2009 - Influenza A (H1N1) Update 5

Dr. Rick Rowland, Manager, Health Services, circulated a memo regarding the continued monitoring of H1N1 on Campus this fall.

With College classes and activities underway, the Pandemic Response Committee would like to provide you with an update about the actions being taken to prepare for a possible H1N1 flu outbreak.

While we continue to monitor the spread of the H1N1 virus, there are currently no confirmed cases of the virus on campus.  All classes and activities are and will operate normally until further notice.

You will notice H1N1 awareness posters going up on campus over the next few days.  These posters serve as reminders of simple steps we can all take to protect against the flu.
