English as a Second Language

Enroll in English as a Second Language at Algonquin College Language Institute and improve your English communication skills. Your language training will focus on a combination of skills which includes speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Day Programs provide seven levels of language instruction offered on a full-time basis.

Levels 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 - Intensive - 8 week terms.
Levels 7 and 8 - Advanced Skills and Academic Preparation - 8 week terms.

Unless otherwise indicated, the above levels are scheduled between 8 am and 6 pm every day.
Courses are also offered on a part-time basis during the evening, as well as on weekends and focus on enhancing specific language skills and are offered at different levels to meet individual language needs.

All students registered in an English as a Second Language course have access to the
Multimedia Language Lab
. Please Note: A placement test is required for ALL levels of ESL training. Results from your FREE placement test will determine your starting level. Each semester you will progress to the most appropriate level for your needs and abilities.

Admission Information
   
International Students
Step 1:
Apply to the International Education Centre (Room C429).  After you have been accepted and have received a visa from a Canadian Embassy to study in Canada, you will take two tests upon your arrival in Ottawa: a TOEIC Test (Test of English for International Communications) and the Algonquin writing test.  The Algonquin test is given on several dates throughout the year. Dates and testing information are listed in the left hand menu under Language Testing.
Step 2:
Based on the results of your TOEIC and the Algonquin writing tests, you will be placed in one of 8 ESL levels. Registration worksheets will be ready for you.
Step 3:
Register for your courses at the Language Institute in Room B442.
 
Canadian Students
Step 1:
Write a free placement test at Algonquin. This test is given on several dates during the year. - Dates and testing information.
Step 2:

You will be advised of your level and given a registration worksheet that enables you to enroll in that level.
Step 3:
If you do not require financial assistance to pay for courses, you can register with your registration worksheet on the appropriate registration dates for the courses in your level.

If you need financial assistance from the Ontario Special Bursary Plan (OSBP), you must fill out two forms: a long form (every fall, usually before September) and a short form (every 8 week session). Submit the forms to the Financial Aid Office for them to determine whether or not you can qualify for financial assistance. After you are approved by the Financial Aid Office, bring your OSBP-approved form and your registration worksheet to the Language Institute office (Room B442) to register for courses in your level.
