ACSIS - A Web based student and staff server for academic and administrative information. Adobe Writer/Reader - See PDF Backup - To make a copy for archive in case something happens to the data on the original location. Sometimes special hardware or software is used. See also, Restore. BES - Blackberry Enterprise Server, found on Blackberries to synchronize email and information between desktop and mobile software. Blackberry - A PDA device which includes various features like telephone, email, GPS, Browser, etc. Blackboard - An application used by students and teachers to teach, test exchange files and other academic functions. Boot - To start a device from an off state. It will go through a series of steps in order to be ready to use. CAOS - Is an instrument used by ITS and the College generally to notify people of significant system problems. Citrix - An application available to Algonquin students and staff which allows you to run MS Office Suite, Smarterm, Heat and other applications even though they aren't installed on your computer. You download and install a small client an run it when you want to use the programs. It means you don't have to buy the programs for your home computer. Communication Suite - Refers to Microsoft Office 2007 Connector - The Sun connector was the mechanism which synchronized Webmail, Outlook and your calendar. This will be gone when the Exchange project is complete. CTC - Corporate Technologies Committee Deepfreeze - This is an application on student lab PCs which resets the computers to a standard configuration after a person logs off. Note - Any file saved to C drive will be deleted when they log off. Domain - A network area. For Algonquin the areas are divided between Perth, Pembroke and Woodroffe.. See Domain Consolidation below. Domain consolidation - The is a change to the network structure where the separate network sections for Pembroke domain, Perth domain and Woodroffe domain and merged into one. It is done for logistic reasons. E-Classroom - These are labs set up with multimedia capability at the teacher's station. There may also be student machines in the room. Support is through ITS at ext 2500. Educational Pricing - This is specially low pricing offered by vendors and manufacturers to educational institutions and students. Employee Number - A 5 digit number assigned to each Algonquin staff by HR . You can find it on your staff ID card. Ethernet - A type of connection cable used for network devices. At Algonquin it is used for computers and phones. Exchange - A Microsoft environment consisting of server, client, software and a network. It facilitates email, calendar and other organization and communication needs. Format - To format is to structure something is a recognizable form. Formating a hard drive will usually overwrite existing data. File formats refer to the function or structure of the file's data and is indicated by the three letter extension - .cpt, .doc, .exe. G.A.L. - Global Address Lookup is a new directory lookup for exchange for phone or email. It does not include students in the listing. Genesis - The College student information system which holds schedules, courses and all student information. Genesis.net is the windows version. Heat - A work order system used by ITS. Helix - A media streaming server IMAP - Internet Message Access Protocol. A protocol used for sending email, generally leaves the email on the server IT Fee - A technology fee paid by most students each semester to help pay for accounts, computers, software, printing, networks and upgrades. JES - Sun Java Enterprise System. This refers to the java system for mail that is used by Webmail and the connector.
Linux - A graphic version of the Unix operating system. Mac Address - This is a unique number stored on all network adapters. These numbers identify the device uniquely on the entire Internet. It could be in a computer, phone, printer, vending machine, camera or any other device which communicates on a network. It has digits 0-9 and letters a-f. (ie 001e7a25a412) Network Share - An area on a network hard drive which users use for storage or sharing of data. Oracle - A database system used at Algonquin for teaching. Outage - An Outage is when a service or system is completely or partially unavailable for a time. It may be a planned outage for maintenance or and unforeseen incident resulting from a component failure or other unforeseen cause. OWA - Outlook Web Access, the exchange replacement for Webmail. Requires VPN, Secure Portal or dial-up when off campus. PDA - Personal Digital Assistant, generally referring to a Blackberry. Also known as a "mobile device" PDF - Files in the format of Adobe Writer and Reader. Used for easy reading by all. http://get.adobe.com/reader/ PEAP - A wireless communication protocol PeopleSoft - An application used by Algonquin by administration to manager finances, ordering and other tasks. POP3 - A protocol used for sending email, generally removes the email from the server Proof of Concept - Proof of concept is a short realization (or synopsis) of a certain method or idea(s) to demonstrate its feasibility, or a demonstration in principle, whose purpose is to verify that some concept or theory is probably capable of working. PST file - Personal Storage Table is a file used to store local copies of messages, calendar events, and other items within Microsoft software Quota - This refers to the maximum capacity that a user can have for their own use. For example a network share hard drive may be 100Gig divided into 100 one Gig user quotas. Restore - To retrieve a copy of data, usually from a backup. Sometimes special hardware or software is used. See also Backup. Safe mode - A limited running mode for Microsoft Windows where not all features will be available. Safe mode is used for resolving technical problems Secure Portal - An alternative to VPN which allows you to connect to the College remotely. Smarterm - A terminal emulator which allows you to work with a server application as though you are using a "dumb terminal". Commonly used at Algonquin for Genesis. SPAM - Electronic junk mail Spyware - A program that installs itself on your computer in a secretive manner, then performs various exploitive functions. Student Number - A number assigned to each Algonquin staff by the Registrar. You can find it on your student ID or any mail correspondence. Usually starts with 040 and has nine digits - ie 040-266-266.
Unity - This is the name of the Algonquin VOIP Phone and voicemail system. Unix - An operating system, like Windows or Mac OS. Virus - A program written to exploit vulnerabilities in programs, networks and common practices. VPN - Virtual Private Networking allows you to access College services even when you are not at the College. Webmail - A web based method for accessing College email which is used by students, retirees and some staff. WEP - A wireless encryption and communication protocol
