International E-Newsletter
topGreetings!

Summer is upon us, and your students are preparing for their final exams...

In this edition of our e-Newsletter, we would like to highlight the hard work, leading to great results, of Jim and Tim from Algonquin's China Office. They both recently visited the Ottawa Campus for a few days, and the opportunity to meet staff and faculty was very beneficial to all.

Another bright concept we would like to feature this month: the study of the science of generating and transmitting light (photons) through our Photonics Engineering program.

Students in this program are preparing to become leaders in the development of breakthrough technologies that have been projected to play a dominant role in this century-impacting communication, information technology and health care, as well as consumer commodities.

As always, we remain available to answer your questions and assist you with your students' application to Algonquin.

Warm Regards,

Nadia Ramseier

documentary Representation in China is great news for Algonquin College

Student recruitment for Algonquin College in China is soaring. "The International Education Centre (IEC) is working very hard to continue tapping into the largest market in the world... China." says IEC Manager Susan Olszynko "And the best way to do that was to open our own recruitment branch in China."

Managing Algonquin's Office in Beijing are two people familiar with Algonquin College, Jim Cornell and Tim Yan. Jim was previously the ESL International Coordinator for Algonquin College ESL program and is very familiar with the college, Ottawa and Canada. Tim, a Chinese citizen, and a former student of Jim's, spent more than two weeks in Ottawa this past March visiting Algonquin College for himself and found it a jaw dropping experience. "Until you see the facilities for yourself, it's hard to explain to students and parents the type of investment there is in education in Canada and more specifically Algonquin College. Once I saw the campus and city for myself I now feel very confident about  promoting it to our clients."

"Canada to the world is seen as a safe, clean, rich, developed nation with a strong education system. Opportunities are endless in Canada if you work hard," states Jim Cornell. "Chinese citizens are used to hard work, they now are seeking opportunity. Canada has opportunity which makes it an easy choice to come and study, and then start a professional career."

Graduates of our 3-year Advanced Diploma in Photonics Engineering Technology program are able to analyze the operation and performance of

  • photonicslasers
  • optical systems
  • fiber optic devices
  • telecommunications equipment
  • electronic packaging
  • computer vision systems
  • photonics manufacturing equipment

Graduates will also have the mathematical knowledge and problem-solving skills necessary to participate in the development and support of new photonic systems and technologies and may find employment in the telecommunications, biotechnology, manufacturing and aerospace industries.

Graduates of this program will also be ideal candidates to work in research, product development and product testing laboratories.

In the third year of this program, students must complete and defend a design/analysis project under the guidance of a faculty advisor. During the project, students must demonstrate their knowledge and problem-solving skills in a simulated industrial setting.

IN THE NEWS: Algonquin's Business program competing with traditional MBA programs

College successfully competing with MBA programs

With tough times often comes a need for new thinking - and an argument for students to consider college to learn practical business training right out of high school rather than waiting for training at the executive level, argues one academic at Algonquin College.

The school's International Business Program is celebrating its fifth anniversary, with program enrolment doubling over that time to 60 full-time students annually as globalization and the export business drives up demand for a better understanding of commerce beyond our borders.

"The program is basically a very hands-on, more applied-type program where students actually do things,"
says Norman Lomow, a former trade commissioner who co-ordinates the program. "We do theory but it's very much applied, which makes it quite different from what universities do."

The program is based on accreditation standards from the Forum for International Trade Training (FITT), a certification body that oversees training that leads to the Certified International Trade Professional designation. The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade calls this "the highest level of professional accreditation available in the country."
