MENTORS ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The obligations of the mentor are:
- Being committed to participate in the mentoring program for duration of 6 months
- Attend a 3 hour training workshop
- Being fully available to participate and attend to the mentorship relationship for at least 24 hrs during a period of six months. Approximately 1 hr/week
- Communicating in mutually agreed-upon ways
The mentor’s role is to:
- Make expectations clear
- Seek and listen to constructive feedback
- Make yourself accessible
- Encourage active listening and work with different learning styles
- Show the big picture and break down complex tasks
- Communicate clearly and listen actively and empathetically
- Ask questions, and promote critical thinking
- Teach by explaining and giving balanced constructive feedback
- Challenge by giving new responsibilities and promoting independence
The mentor’s responsibilities consist of:
- Observing obligations and behaviours for an effective mentoring relationship
- Identifying skills required by market demands
- Helping mentee understand the Canadian workplace culture
- Assisting in other activities as identified in the mentorship agreement
- Assisting mentee to master self-marketing techniques and confidence-building
- Familiarize yourself with the on line course “Mentorship, A Way to Connect”
- Supporting and encouraging efforts to become professionally established
- Guiding mentee through licensing and accreditation process if required
- Assisting in the selection of technical skills, upgrading programs and resources
- Locating publications and workshops on recent development in their field
- Identifying and helping mentee to seize employment or job training placement opportunities
