Blogging Platforms
There are a number of different blogging platforms available. We are presenting here the most popular platform. It is easy to use and free to set up. Algonquin College’s website uses the WordPress platform and internal resources can be found here.
WordPress.com and WordPress.org
WordPress is the most popular blogging tool available. WordPress comes in two varieties — .com and .org. WordPress.com sites are hosted by WordPress, which means that you don’t have to pay extra for web site hosting. WordPress.org is self-hosted, which means you can have your own web site hosting and domain name.
WordPress.com has fewer features than WordPress.org, but it is a great starting point if you want to try blogging. You can always export your content later on if you decide to go with the self-hosted option.
WordPress comes with a wide variety of built-in design themes that allow you to customize the design of your blog. It also has several plugins that allow you to extend the functionality of the blog if you want to add things like social media features, a photo gallery or discussion forums.
WordPress.org allows you to completely customize the design, layout and functionality of your site, so you can build anything from a simple blog site to a fully custom web site on the WordPress platform.
