Blogging in HigherEd
Blogging can be very effective in higher education for both faculty and departments. Blogs are an opportunity to make a direct connection with your audience, share ideas, commentary, expert analysis, and promote programs. Here are a few ways you can use blogging in higher ed:
News and Announcements
From departmental news to service updates, promotion of college events or the latest important information or deadlines for students, your blog can be a hub of information.
Publications
In addition to traditional print and advertising media, you can publish information designed to promote programs on a blog. This provides an alternative way for students, faculty and prospective students to access information and also improves online search-ability of promotional and informational content.
Commentary and Analysis
Blogs are a great tool for sharing commentary and opinion on various topics. A blog can be written by a single author or have multiple contributors.
Learning Communities
Creating a blog for a course is a great way to share information with students and encourage engagement. Foster a learning community around your course by posting supplementary course materials, recorded lectures, class notes and assignments or homework. Encourage comments and participation by students.
Journaling
Involve students in the practice of blogging by having them establish a blog where they can write about their progress in your course, or post their thoughts and ideas. Students can share their blog posts with classmates and encourage discourse and commentary.
