Algonquin’s School of Media and Design is proud to offer a two-year program in Professional Writing, designed for writers who have completed high school, have an aptitude and passion for writing and a willingness to practice their craft in a variety of media. The program also encourages applications from university graduates and those with life experience in writing and/or media, with the possibility of direct entry to the second year of the program if Prior Learning Assessment requirements are met. Graduates will possess exemplary writing skills for both electronic and print media.
There is a growing demand in government and private industry, broadcast and non-broadcast media, for freelance writers. The ability to research and write scripts for video, television, radio and live events is highly marketable. Another major area of growth is in writing articles for internet news and magazines. If in addition writers can produce briefs, reports, and new media content, write speeches and presentations, and know how to conduct and promote themselves as professional writers, they can reasonably expect employment.
The program emphasizes both practical and creative writing exercises, business practices, and work experiences in the community. Local freelancers will conduct workshops and may mentor the students as appropriate. As well, students will experience one field placement per year. Between Levels II and III, every effort will be made to place students in summer jobs where they will be able to improve their research, writing, communication and business skills, as well as forging connections with potential clients and employers.
Graduates of this program also have the option of going on to the existing one-year post-diploma certificate program, Scriptwriting, which offers courses in writing for film, theatre, television, radio, non-broadcast video and new media. As well, interested graduates may consider continuing their education and training in Algonquin’s Journalism - Print, Broadcasting – Television or Broadcasting – Radio programs, Advertising or Public Relations.
