What is the difference between Interior Design and Interior Decorating?

Design is the creation of a structure; it is the foundation of decorating. It identifies the architectural components that in turn provide a blank canvas for decorators. Designers create the space through planning according to the building code, and decorators utilize finishes, furniture and accessories to create an individual space for clients. Interior Designers are the architects of interior spaces. Interior Decorators enhance these visual architectural details with finishing techniques and unique solutions. Using furniture layouts, decorators concentrate on the selection of fvurniture and finishes suitable for a given space. To decorate is to create an atmosphere that inspire while tailoring to individual needs.

Will there be a lot of homework?
Amount of homework is based on each individual person and each course. A rough guideline to use, according to current students, is to double homework time to hours in class. Students who use studio class time effectively have less to complete after class hours.

What kind of classes are there?
Classes are held in a combination of drafting labs, computer labs and classrooms. Some of our courses are hybrid courses that allow for some time in classroom settings, some time on-line or off campus.

How early do classes start?
Classes can begin as early as 8 a.m. and classes can end as late as 10 p.m. Monday to Friday

How much will it cost for supplies?
Cost of supplies varies from course to course although the initial outlay in drafting equipment is used for many years throughout the program and will be used in students' future career. Students will need to purchase a variety of materials to complete projects. Equipment kits are assembled in the bookstore before the first semester for purchase.(See below)

Equipment Kits
1. Marker Supply Kit - approx. $110
2. Basic Drafting Skills - approx. $100
3. Drawing Techniques - approx. $80

Do I need a computer?
Students find it handy to have a computer with Microsoft Word capabilities, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat Reader. There are a limited number of computers for student use in campus with a set number of printing per semester for students’ needs. However, our campus is wireless if you'd like to use your own laptop. If you decide to use your own computer be sure to budget for print cartridges and paper.

Do I need a drafting table?

Our students recommend the purchase of your own drafting table with a parallel ruler installed. The drafting board should be covered with a green vinyl surface known as BORCO. This can be purchased through the local art stores or architectural suppliers. There is unsupervised studio time with the drafting lab but because of the high use of the space for scheduled classes, most of the free use is late at night or on the weekends.

Do I need all my equipment every day?

It does help to know your schedule of classes and bring in the equipment required in each class. Students will either rent a locker or purchase a good travel case to transport their equipment back and forth to school. Always check with the instructor the week before as to what you will need in class the following week.

What are the job possibilites?

Graduates of the Interior Decorating progam can find employment in a variety of creative and exciting areas. Grads can work in a number of sales positions in both retail and wholesale environments. These can include stores and businesses offering a variety of merchandise such as lighting, furniture, drapery and flooring. Many also find employment in the Kitchen and Bath industry. Interior Decorating grads display strong skills as colour consultants. As a result, many find employment with paint suppliers or in the building industry with contractors or with new homebuyers. Many students evolve into self-employed proprietors' often creating employment or finding work in a decorating studio.
