What are the tests?

Two areas are tested: English and general knowledge

How long are the tests?

The tests take from 2 ½ hours to 3 hours to complete.

Why do I have to take an English test?

The English test evaluation students’ skills in three areas: reading, vocabulary and grammar. This part of the test is multiple choice. There’s also an essay to assess your ability to communicate clearly and coherently, using proper grammar.

Reason:   Jobs for graduates require you be able to read material and quickly understand it, be able to acquire a specialized vocabulary on top of an excellent general vocabulary and write and speak using proper grammar. A high level of proficiency is required.

Tips for success: Pick up a book of tests (SATs or GEDs) at any bookstore and do the practice exercises
.
What is the general knowledge test about?
Students are assessed on a number of general knowledge areas (Canadian and international), including media, arts, entertainment, sports, history, geography, government and newsmakers. This portion of the test is multiple choice.

Reason: You need to have an above-average understanding of the world around you. There are a number of subject areas, so, as a well-rounded individual, you should be able to score well even if you are weak in some subject areas.

Tips for success: Read the newspaper every day, read a news magazine such as Maclean’s of the Canadian issue of Time, read summaries of world history, look over maps of the world.
