Additional Information/Highlights of the Child and Youth Worker Program

 

  • Comprehensive student success program initiatives including a full week orientation to the program, peer matching activities, academic coaching and advising available to all first year students.
  • The only C.Y.W. program in Ontario to offer two courses in Therapeutic Outdoor Activity Interventions (fall and winter camping experience).

Winter Camping Experience (Class of 2007)

  • Through the program students earn a stand alone certification in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention sanctioned by Cornell University.
  • Opportunity to participate and receive certification in Suicide Intervention Training for a nominal fee.

  • Heavy emphasis on application of theory in practical field experiences.  All second year students are in field placement Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for 24 hours per week.  All third year students are in field placement Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for 24 hours per week.  Placements include, but are not limited to, working with community partners such as the Ottawa Carleton Catholic and Ottawa Carleton District School Boards, The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, The Children’s Aid Society, The Roberts Smart Center, Youth Services Bureau and Community/Health Service Centers.
